Rongai Route – Remote & Scenic
The Rongai Route is considered one of the easiest routes up Kilimanjaro, offering a high summit success rate. It begins on the northern side of the mountain, near the Kenyan border, and is among the least traveled paths—perfect for trekkers seeking a quieter, less crowded experience.
The trail provides a unique perspective of Kilimanjaro, as climbers ascend from the north and descend via the Marangu Route on the south side. This creates a wonderfully varied trek with views of the mountain from multiple angles.
Reaching the trailhead takes about 3 hours from Moshi, passing through picturesque villages and coffee plantations, with a stop at Marangu to register climbing permits. Alternatively, the route can also be accessed from Amboseli National Park in Kenya (about 2 hours, including border crossing). For this option, copies of passports are required in advance.
With its gentle gradients, quieter trails, and scenic diversity, Rongai is an excellent choice for those who prefer a more gradual ascent away from the busier routes.
