Marangu Route – The “Coca-Cola Route”
The Marangu Route, nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route”, is the least expensive way to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro and the only trail that offers hut accommodations along the way. Trekkers enjoy the relative comfort of communal huts equipped with solar lighting and simple beds, making it a popular choice for those seeking a less rugged experience.
The huts are shared, with sponge mattresses and pillows provided. There are 60 beds at both Mandara and Kibo Huts and 120 beds at Horombo Hut. Bathrooms and running water are available at the lower huts, while the final camp has basic men’s and ladies’ latrines. Meals are served in dining huts, where climbers from around the world come together, creating a lively and social atmosphere.
The Marangu Route is typically completed in 5 days, making it the shortest route to the summit. However, adding an extra day (6 days total) significantly improves acclimatization. The additional day is usually spent resting at Horombo Hut or hiking up the nearby Mawenzi Peak.
While it may be considered less scenic compared to other routes, the Marangu Route remains a classic choice—especially for those who value comfort, affordability, and the social aspect of group trekking.
