ABOUT MACHAME ROUTE

Machame Route – The “Whiskey Route”
Nicknamed the “Whiskey Route”, Machame is one of the most popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is known for being more challenging and slightly more expensive than the Marangu Route, but it rewards trekkers with exceptional acclimatization opportunities, diverse scenery, and a higher summit success rate.
The route is ideal for adventurous climbers with some hiking or backpacking experience, as it includes steeper sections compared to Marangu and Rongai. Despite its difficulty, it is not considered the hardest trail, and its gradual acclimatization profile makes it one of the most recommended options.
Highlights of the Machame Route include:
• Scenic variety: Hike through 5 distinct ecological zones, from lush rainforest to alpine desert and icy glaciers.
• Acclimatization advantage: Multiple “walk high, sleep low” opportunities, including an optional scramble to Lava Tower.
• Iconic features: Crossing the vast Shira Plateau, climbing the dramatic Barranco Wall, and traversing beneath Kilimanjaro’s southern ice fields.
• Pre-summit rest option: A split climb before the summit push, giving trekkers more time to rest and prepare.
The Machame Route approaches the summit from the southwest and descends via the Mweka Route. While its popularity means more trekkers on the trail, its breathtaking landscapes and balanced acclimatization profile make it one of the best overall routes to reach Uhuru Peak.
